Measure twice, print once
Course Title: Sublimation Design Fundamentals: From Measurement to Print
Module Title: Measuring & Designing for Sublimation Blanks
Objective:
Upon completing this module, students will be able to:
- Accurately measure various sublimation blanks (ceramic mug, mini polyester shirt, keyring, aluminum business card).
- Determine appropriate design dimensions based on measurements and desired aesthetics.
- Utilize Canva to create custom design pages with correct pixel or unit sizes.
- Save individual designs for later use.
- Consolidate multiple designs onto a single A4 custom page in Canva to create a print-ready file.
- Understand the importance of mirroring designs for sublimation.
Materials Needed:
- Sublimation blanks: 11oz ceramic mug, mini polyester shirt, 1-2 different shaped keyrings, 1 aluminum business card.
- Flexible tape measure or a ruler.
- Pen and paper for taking notes and recording measurements.
- Computer or tablet with reliable internet access.
- Canva account (free or Pro version is suitable).
Lesson 1: Understanding Your Blanks & Initial Design Setup in Canva
Introduction to Sublimation & Measurement
Sublimation printing transfers an image from special paper to a material (blank) using heat and pressure. For a crisp, professional result, your design must perfectly fit your blank. The first and most crucial step is accurate measurement. While we’ll provide common sizes, always measure your specific blank as dimensions can vary between manufacturers.
General Measurement Tips:
- Use a flexible tape measure for curved surfaces like mugs, and a ruler for flat items.
- Measure the printable area of your blank, not just its total size.
- Consider adding a small “bleed” (extra design area beyond the edge) for wraps to ensure full coverage, preventing white lines.
Part 1: Measuring and Designing Individual Items in Canva
For each item below, follow these steps:
Step 1: Measure Your Blank
Carefully measure the height and width of the area you intend to sublimate. Record these measurements.
Step 2: Decide Your Design Size
Based on your measurements and artistic preference, determine the exact dimensions for your design. Remember to aim for a high resolution (at least 300 DPI for print quality). When creating a custom design in Canva, you can specify dimensions in pixels, inches, millimeters, or centimeters.
Step 3: Create Your Custom Design Page in Canva
- Go to the Canva homepage.
- Click on “Create a design” in the top right corner.
- Select “Custom size” (often found at the bottom of the dropdown or as a dedicated button).
- Important: Change the measurement unit to “in” (inches), “mm” (millimeters), or “cm” (centimeters) before entering your dimensions, matching how you measured.
- Enter your precise width and height.
- Click “Create new design.” This will open a blank canvas.
Step 4: Design Your Image
Create your desired design on this custom-sized canvas using Canva’s tools.
Step 5: Save Your Individual Design
- Once your design is complete, click “Share” (or “Download” in older versions) in the top right.
- Select “Download.”
- For sublimation, a high-quality file is crucial. Canva suggests PNG, but for 300 DPI quality, especially if you don’t have Canva Pro, choose “PDF Print (best for professional printing)”. This option will save your file at 300 DPI.
- Download your design.
Now, let’s apply these steps to each item:
Item 1: Mini Polyester Shirt
- Measuring: Lay the mini shirt flat. Measure the width of the chest area where you want your design to go, and then the height from the collar down to the desired bottom of the design. For a “mini” shirt, these dimensions will be significantly smaller than adult or even youth sizes.
- Example (adjust based on your mini shirt): For a small “left chest” style design, you might aim for 2-3 inches in width and height. For a “full front” design on a mini shirt, perhaps 5-7 inches wide by 6-8 inches high.
- Design in Canva: Create a custom page with your measured width and height. For example,
6 inches W x 7 inches H. - Design Considerations: Ensure your design is appropriate for the scale of the mini shirt.
- Saving: Save as a “PDF Print” file.
