Mastering Canva’s Free Tools for Branding

Now that you know what a brand kit is, let’s get practical. In this lesson, we’ll dive into Canva and set up our workspace. We’ll also cover a crucial workaround to make branding effective using only the free version of Canva.

A Quick Tour of the Canva Interface

When you first log in to Canva, you’ll see your main dashboard. Let’s focus on the key areas we’ll be using.

  • Create a design: This is where you’ll start any new project, from an Instagram post to a logo.
  • Left-Side Menu: This menu gives you access to your projects, templates, and a section called “Brand.”

The “Brand Kit” Limitation on a Free Account

In the left menu, you will see a “Brand” section. If you click on it, Canva prompts you to set up your Brand Kit. However, the free version is very limited.

  • You can only save one color palette with a maximum of three colors.
  • You cannot upload your own logos.
  • You cannot upload custom fonts.

The ``Brand Kit Hack``: Your Central Design File

Instead of relying on Canva’s limited Brand Kit feature, we are going to create a single, central Canva design file that will act as our complete brand guide. This is the most important thing you will set up in this lesson.

Step 1: Create Your Brand Guide File

  • On the Canva homepage, click “Create a design” in the top right corner.
  • Choose “Custom Size” and enter the dimensions 1920 x 1080 px. This is a standard presentation slide size, which is perfect for a one-page guide.
  • At the top of the page, name your new design. Click on “Untitled design” and change it to something clear, like “[Your Startup Name] – Brand Kit”.

Step 2: Set Up Your Guide

Inside this new file, we will add all our brand elements as we create them in the upcoming modules. For now, you can create simple text placeholders.

  • Click on the “Text” tool on the left-hand menu.
  • Click “Add a heading” and type “Logos”.
  • Add other headings for “Color Palette” and “Typography”.

Your file will look something like this:

This document is now your “Brand Kit Hack.” Whenever you create a new design in Canva, you will keep this file open in a separate browser tab. It will allow you to easily access your logos, copy your color hex codes, and remember which fonts to use, ensuring perfect consistency every single time.
