Assembling and Activating Your Brand Kit
Applying Your Brand Kit to Canva Designs
(Lesson Introduction)
A brand guide is useless if you don’t use it. This lesson is all about workflow. We’ll walk through a step-by-step process for creating a new design (like a social media post) while using your brand kit to ensure it is perfectly on-brand.
The Two-Tab Workflow
The easiest way to work is with two browser tabs open:
-
Tab 1: Your completed “[Your Startup Name] – Brand Kit” file.
-
Tab 2: Your new Canva design project (e.g., an “Instagram Post”).

Step-by-Step: Creating an On-Brand Instagram Post
Let’s imagine you’re creating a new Instagram post from scratch.
Step 1: Add Your Logo
-
Go to your Brand Kit tab.
-
Click on your Submark (icon) logo and copy it (Ctrl+C or Cmd+C).
-
Go to your new Instagram Post tab and paste it (Ctrl+V or Cmd+V).
-
Position and resize it as needed.

Step 2: Apply Your Brand Colors
-
For your top 3 colors: When you click on an element and open the color menu, your three saved brand colors will appear on the left under your Brand Kit name for easy, one-click access.
-
For other colors: Go to your Brand Kit tab. Copy the hex code for the color you want. Go to your new design tab, select the element you want to change, open the color menu, click the “+” to add a new color, and paste the hex code into the field.

Step 3: Use Your Brand Fonts
-
Add a heading to your Instagram post.
-
Glance at your Brand Kit tab to remember your heading font’s name (e.g., “Montserrat Extra Bold”).
-
In your new design tab, select your text and choose “Montserrat Extra Bold” from the font dropdown menu.
-
Repeat the process for your body text, selecting your chosen body font (e.g., “Lato Regular”).
By following this simple workflow, you are guaranteeing that every single design you produce is 100% consistent with your brand identity.
