Developing Logo Variations
Developing Logo Variations
Meet Your Logo Family
A professional brand uses three main logo variations:
- Primary Logo: This is your main logo. It’s the most complete version, usually combining your icon and your full business name. It’s used on your website, in email signatures, and on large print materials.
- Secondary Logo: A more compact version of your logo. Often, this means stacking the icon and text vertically instead of horizontally. It’s perfect for smaller spaces or when the primary logo doesn’t fit well.
- Submark (or Icon): This is the simplest form of your logo—often just the graphic element or an initial. It’s used for social media profile pictures, website favicons (the little icon in the browser tab), and as a watermark.
Create Your Variations in Canva
Select your grouped logo, and either click the ``Duplicate`` icon in the top right or use the shortcut (Ctrl+D or Cmd+D).
For the Secondary Logo: Ungroup the elements and rearrange them into a more compact, stacked format.
For the Submark: Delete the text, leaving only your unique graphic icon
The Transparent Background Workaround
Logos need to be placed on top of photos, colored backgrounds, and more. For this, you need a transparent background, which is a Canva Pro feature. Here is our free workaround:
- Select the page with your three final logo variations.
- Click the background color icon on the top toolbar and change the page background to a bright, obnoxious color that is not used anywhere in your logos (e.g., neon green or hot pink).
- Click “Share” > “Download”. Select “PNG” as the file type and download the page.
- Go to a free background remover website like www.remove.bg.
- Upload the PNG file you just downloaded. The tool will automatically remove the bright background.
- Download the new, transparent version of your logos.
Add Your Logos to Your Brand Kit File
Congratulations, you have a complete, professional logo suite! The final step is to organize them.
- Go back to the first page of your “[Your Startup Name] – Brand Kit” file.
- Upload the transparent PNG with your three logo variations to Canva.
- Place the logos on your brand kit page under the “Logos” heading you created earlier.
